Column
Architectural Piece

About
An architectural piece exploring the concept of columns through electromagnetic force. At first I experimented with concepts of columns such as columns of vapour, where steam/vapour would fall slowly in a column structure onto a light for a better column effect. A column of light, where a light rod masked to look like a light beam would hold an object to represent a columns support function. I then continued to explore supportive shapes and support spines and their aesthetic. After which I settled on a concept of a column of electromagnetic force, where an electromagnet is used to levitate an object. This gives an impression of an invisible column of force which represents a columns supportive function, as well as links to how an invisible force of gravity supports the universe. The levitated object is made to represent a column/support structure to better visualise the meaning behind the artefact.
